About the Engagement Rate Calculator
Engagement rate shows how much of your audience interacts with your content. This calculator uses the most common public formula: the average number of interactions per post, divided by your followers, multiplied by 100. If you can see reach in Instagram Insights, it also gives the rate by reach, which compares interactions to the people who actually saw the posts.
Everything is calculated in your browser, and the numbers are never sent or stored. The result panel writes out the formula with your own figures, so you can check it or reproduce it in a spreadsheet.
How to use it
- Enter your current follower count.
- Add up likes and comments across the posts you want to measure, and enter how many posts that is. Add saves and shares if you have them.
- Optionally add average reach per post from Insights.
- Press Calculate to see the rate by followers (and by reach if provided) with the formula.
Example
With these inputs:
- Followers: 5000
- Number of posts measured: 10
- Total likes: 2000
- Total comments: 150
the tool produces output like this:
- Total interactions: 2150
- Average per post: 215
- Engagement rate (by followers): 4.3%
Formula: (total interactions ÷ number of posts) ÷ followers × 100
Your numbers: (2150 ÷ 10) ÷ 5000 × 100 = 4.3%
Who it is for
- Tracking your own progress month to month.
- Comparing formats such as Reels and carousels on your account.
- Putting a number in a media kit, with the formula stated.
Limitations and accuracy
- There is no universal "good" rate. It depends on niche, account size and content type, so compare against your own history.
- Different tools use different formulas, so rates from other calculators are not directly comparable.
- Likes can be hidden and some metrics are only available to professional accounts.
Frequently asked questions
What formula does this calculator use?
Rate by followers = (total interactions ÷ number of posts) ÷ followers × 100. Rate by reach = total interactions ÷ (average reach × number of posts) × 100.
What counts as an interaction?
Likes and comments by default. You can add saves and shares if you have them. Use the same set every time so results are comparable.
What is a good engagement rate?
It varies widely, so we do not give a single target. Track your own rate over time and compare similar posts.
Why is the rate by reach different?
Reach only counts people who saw the post, so it is usually higher than the rate by followers, since many followers never see a given post.
